Just thought I'd add my little, unsubpeonaed voice to the Prop 8 debate. Of course, I must begin with the disclaimer that I am an active LDS and fully support and uphold all the priesthood brethren in the church. That said, the Church's campaign in support of Prop 8 just feels and seems wrong to me. I understand why it's being done, but the rationale flies in the face of all I believe and hold dear as a Latter-Day Saint. If you agree, head on over to signingforsomething.org and add your name to the petition. Even if you don't agree, head on over - there's some good stuff over yonder. I firmly believe, as stated in the church's proclamation on the family, that "marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children." Yet this is the way I look at it - if my child told me one day he was gay and was going to leave the church, I would want him to live as full and beautiful a life as possible, one free of State-endorsed hate and vitriol. We have ABSOLUTELY NO RIGHT to impose our beliefs on others. As Becks once told me, quoting his uncle, a Baptist (?) preacher in Texas, "People are soon going to have no need for religion. We were wrong about women, we were wrong about blacks, and now we're wrong about gays." And as my lovely eternal companion Amanda says, "I'd rather err on the side of compassion." To my limited understanding, overbearing, abusive patriarchal figures practicing unrighteous dominion and callous disregard of temple covenants seem to have done much more to harm the Family than homosexual marriage ever could. Remember: dissent is not treason (or apostasy). Nor does it lead to disunity among church members. Let us stop persecuting those among us who don't support this hateful Proposition.

The Sad Day Has Arrived (Mild Spoiler Alert)

Mark this day as the beginning of Pixar's downfall. I've been waiting for the signs, and they arrived this weekend in a cute, heavy-handed, potentially brilliant but oh-so-overwrought package named Wall-E. Hear me out, nay-sayers. Of course it couldn't live up to the year-long build-up I had given it. I hardly expected it to. And the first 20-ish minutes were pure cinema bliss - greatest-movie-ever quality. Then, unfortunately, they went to space, and we entered Dreamworks-land. Seriously, the beginning was sooooooo beautiful and well-crafted and fun and delightful and inspiring. Unfortunately, hubris has finally taken hold at Pixar - no one can stay on top forever - and they broke their Prime Directive (Story First!), allowing the "message" of the second and third acts to outweigh the story, leading to an uninspiring climax wrought by flat primary- and secondary-characters fighting against the lamest Disney villain since Miguel Ferrer. I loved the references to classic sci-fi. I loved the fire-hydrant pas-de-deux in space. But once the story left Wall-E and Eve (and it did, oh yes, it did) and the humor revolved exclusively around fat people (fat people are just lazy products of their surroundings! how original), the film plummeted nearly past Dreamworks into the Sony/Fox basement. I understand the satirical bent and was looking forward to the way it was integrated into the story, which Pixar generally excels at. Imagine my surprise. I'll see it again. And, Cars-like, I may come to love it. But words fail to describe my initial disappointment, as anyone with me on Saturday can attest. Sure, critics almost universally loved it, and it unsurprisingly raked in major bucks. Pixar's decline will be gradual, not sudden. But noone can survive indefinitely receiving nothing but sycophancy at every turn. Witness Oliver Cowdery, witness the Wachowskis with Matrix 2 & 3. I really really hope I'm wrong.

I have so far avoided seeing any trailer of this besides the early teaser - I simply cover my face with my shirt. Andrew Stanton is ten times the director John Lasseter is. Finding Nemo is definitely one of the all-time great films. And this one, holy cow, I try not to think about it too much to avoid another "Transformers" disappointment, but I can't help it! It's going to kick so many different kinds of booty in so many different ways! I'm still waiting for hubris to bring Pixar down hard, but they, as I, seem amazingly averse to it. Sin Sity Sucks Part 1

Yeah, so....we went to Vegas impromptu-ly a couple weekends ago, and it was way fun to see Shannon and spend time with Justin and my beautiful little family, but Vegas really, kind of, sucks. It's dirty and ugly and mostly sub-par facsimiles of things that are really cool...elsewhere. But here are some pics. This was our (and by "our" I mean "Shannon's") hotel - a beautiful Marriott about 20 minutes off the strip. This is Shanny - Xander actually took this! Pretty good, huh? Of course, I'm not posting the other 67 pictures of his feet he took before and after this one.
The tub/bathroom was HUGE! X loved it. X was intrigued but stressed by the Bellagio fountains, which I had never seen before! Finally, something genuinely cool in Vegas!

Lately I totally got my Fellini on. I'm ashamed to say that until recently, 8 1/2 and Satyricon were the only ones of his I had seen. This film was surprisingly moving and beautiful. I later read that seeing this movie was one of the formative experiences of the late Anthony Minghella's childhood, which caused me to reflect on my formative childhood cinematic experiences, and The Wizard was about all I could come up with. So there you have it.

Manda and I recently rewatched this film, and I was blown away - it had been a few years, but surely I would have remembered how achingly beautiful and amazing this movie was! It was as though I was watching it with fresh eyes. The spare dialogue, the compositions, and especially that music - oh, that music - this movie is a 30-course meal for the eyes, soul, and heart. This is the finale, but don't worry - it gives nothing away. The music in this section especially is unbelievable - watch it loud. I had to get up and leave the room at this part because I was so overwhelmed by the sheer majesty and beauty of it all that I couldn't bear it. I literally had to get up and walk out or I feared my skin would dissolve and I would fly to pieces. Sorry for the purpleness, but this is freaking pure cinema, my friends. Don't miss 2046 either.

Did I mention it was director Marco Bellochio's first film? Extraordinary.

Is that why I'm so excited for it? I mean, think about it: despite the unrealistically-delineated cliques (unlike in real life), the clique-line is easily crossed (unlike in real life) and everyone is always happy because friendship always wins in the end! Whether or not that seems like real life to you will say a lot about your high school experience. It's exactly like Saved by the Bell; the rich stuck-up one even gets them jobs at her country club for the summer! Of course, this film is about as far as possible from Cinematic Terrorism since it basically makes the rich richer while propagating horrible stereotypes and unrealistic body types and I'm so conflicted as I type. What's a girl to do?

1. My co-worker would find the one person left in the company she hasn't told about her IBS and tell him.
2. The entire Coen Bros' abortive "Ladykillers" would have centered on J.K. Simmons and his battle with IBS.
3. March 20th would be declared International IBS Day, in which Bush and his playmates would be given laxatives in effigy in honor of the invasion of Iraq.
4. The old crazies in my ward would all get IBS every Fast Sunday and thereby be too busy bearing down to bear "testimony."
5. "Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The Movie" would become a major studio release and start a trend of Hollywood truth-in-advertising.

Now, I know it's no vampire book for little girls, but it's still a cause for celebration: the greatest film in the history of mankind hits DVD tomorrow! That's right, David Lynch's masterpiece of masterpieces arrives in stores tomorrow, without doubt to be egregiously overlooked once again the way it was in theaters and at awards ceremonies earlier this year. But don't make the same mistake twice! Rush out to see it! It's that good.
